In behalf of Kokam Engineering, Ltd, KOKAM USA is pleased to announce the fourth-generation Kokam Li Po cells in capacities for radio control from 20 mah to 3.2 AH. Kokam produces the widest range of Li Po cells in the world. A summary specification chart is presented below showing cells up to 200AH. Introduction of the 2nd and third generation high discharge rate (HDR) cells started with the original 145 mah cell that popularized Li Pos for RC in 2002 with most first generation cells capable of just 5C peak discharge rate. The second generation 600mah, 700 mah, and 1200 mah cells with capability from 6C to 10C came in early 2003, followed by the third generation 340 mah /20C cell, 1500mah/10C, and, in spring 2004; 2AH 15C and 2AH 20C cells. These latter cells have shown immediate success and are rapidly supplanting glow engines in many new designs and the flood of conversions of glow powered models. Achieving over one horsepower from a pack that weighs less than a pound, or about the same as a 16 ounce tank of fuel, combined with a 90% efficient motor and drive system now exceed the capability of traditional glow engines; all clean and quiet! First-generation Kokam and all other cells have to be paralleled to sustain that power with the resultant weight and cost penalty.
During the next two months, five new cells listed in the summary table are being introduced to round out the full range of Kokam RC cells as the fourth generation HDR cells. All Kokam cells are/will be made available in standard packs made up in modular form for up to 6S. By use of Kokam USA connector modules, packs may be assembled up to five in parallel as desired. Unitized packs will soon be made available in parallel-series format Super Packs that have all provisions for cell balance charging and maintenance. As is our policy, the needs of all modelers are being met with the selection of modular or unitized packs as you choose. Please check at
http://www.fmadirect.com for announcement of specific cells, packs, and accessories. As with all Kokam products, the new cells and packs will be available from fmadirect and authorized Kokam distributors and dealers.
The cells and packs now available as 20mah, 48 mah, 145 mah, 340 mah, 1500 mah, 2AH/15C and 2.1AH/20C are in stock and shipping. The current KOK700HC, KOK 1020; KOK 1200; and KOK 3270/5C cells and packs will be discontinued for RC when stocks are depleted. Five new cells, added to the 20mah; 145mah; 1500 mah; 2AH/15C and 2.1AH / 20C series now mean that all Kokam cells/packs for RC are from 8 to 20C continuous and 14 to 40 C peak HDR depending on the model. Those five cells are:

These new cells will bring about a revolution in electric RC modeling. The ability to deliver burst current of 30 or 40C for a second and 15 or 20C continuously without damage or significant reduction in cycle life is unprecedented. In combination with the powerful, efficient brushless motors being introduced along with matching ESCs, any RC model now can be powered cleanly and quietly with electric. Kokam USA has prepared an Applications Note titled “Handbook for Application of HDR Li Po Cells” that will appear in the Support Section at
http://www.fmadirect.com to show the advantages of using HDR Li Po cells for RC. For starters: The cost per flight for electric power with the new Kokam HDR cells projects to be approximately 20% as much as for glow, based on life cycle costs. Although the initial outlay for electric may be more, the recurring cost of fuel Vs charge current cost is huge.
